The Hermanus Botanical Society raises funds for use in the Fernkloof Nature Reserve
and for conservation in the area. One of the biggest fundraising events is the
annual Hermanus Wildflower Festival, organized by the society and held usually
mid- to end September.
The society administers and/or supports various projects such as alien vegetation
control schemes and the Cliff Path Management Group. Members liaise with municipal
staff and Coastcare staff to form hack groups in several areas.
Latest project is called “Fernkloof Nature Reserve Living Classroom – a proposal
for a joint Overstrand Conservation Foundation/Botanical Society Environmental
Education Programme.” Fernkloof is a wonderful environmental education resource
for young and old alike. In order to tap the resource, however, learning resource
material needs to be made available that is suitable for the needs of the various
kinds and levels of learner who should be making use of the Reserve.The first joint
programme relates to engaging with schools to register on the Eco-Schools programme.
